Southern California youth baseball teams take a hit during COVID-19

Like many businesses and organizations across the country, the sports industry had to shut down operations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While professional sports have made their way back into our daily lives, this is not the case for youth sports and the young athletes who participate in them. Some youth athletes had their senior year stripped away from them, while others had to say goodbye to their teammates and were forced to walk away from the sport they loved.

How parents, coaches and youth baseball athletes navigate play during a pandemic

Imagine waking up, putting on your uniform, packing your gear and getting ready for baseball practice. Now imagine arriving at the field wearing a face mask, going through a temperature check and answering questions about your health to determine whether or not you can practice with your teammates. Fast forward to today, USC has over 48,000 students and more than 4,400 full-time faculty. There are over 375,000 living alumni in the “Trojan Family.”

Some students are only participating one day and parents said they have reached out to teachers to get the school work in advance so their children will not fall behind, according to reports by CBS.

“I think what we’ve seen both at USC, as well as at institutions across the country, is that when we have high levels of disease in the community, like we still have in L.A., when institutions come back in person, it’s explosive growth,” said Van Orman. “It’s explosive growth that impacts getting not only those students, but it also impacts the community in which that university sits.”
